I need some suggestions on bookkeeping software please! Any bookkeeping client that I received has always been very local where I went to their establishment a couple times a week for a couple of hours to do their bookkeeping. I have never actually had a "virtual" bookkeeping gig, until now.

What software is any of you using for a virtual bookkeeping gig? How do your clients get to you their invoices, receipts..etc?

I would appreciate your input!

Thank you.

I have used QuickBooks online for a couple of clients. There's also ways to access their computer with www.gotomypc.com. These clients usually scanned their paperwork and then emailed me the PDFs.
Thank you Sue! I really appreciate your help :-)
Hi Patricia

There is also remote desktop that comes with Microsoft so you can actually sign in and use the client's actual server and therefore software. As Sue says the invoices could be scanned but if initially there is far too much to scan I am sure the client could post/ courier you the invoices and necessary paperwork. Once settled in you could have further invoices scanned on a weekly basis.

Great, thank you Michele. Appreciate your advice!
Hi Patricia:
I don't do virtual book keeping but there is a new application that is free online now call Outright. If you are an accountant this may bore you as it is geared towards those who has knowledge of accounting but is not in practice. Other than this there is QuickBooks online as well as MYOB. These latter two solutions are not free though except for their base trial products.

Thank you Michelle, I never heard of Outright, but I am definitely going to check that out!
Patricia:
You are most welcomed.
Other ways to handle virtual bookkeeping with Quickbooks is to have the client make a copy of their file and email it to you. This considers that you have Quickbooks on your computer. This method may cause some confusion though because you both will be able to enter transactions into the file, which may cause some duplications. Another choice would be to have the client create the accountants copy of the file and transfer it to you. This method creates a cut off date where you are able to enter transactions previous to the cut off date only and the client can only enter transactions after the cut off date. No chance of duplication here.

The best method I have found is to use http://logmein.com which allows direct access to the clients computer. Of course, there is a time issue with this because it is difficult, if not impossible, for both you and the client to work on the computer at the same time.
Patricia I discovered another a new online accounting resource tonight. It is an online accounting and ERP open source software all bundled into one called PhreeBooks (Free is spelt Phree on this website) Books. It can be found at http://www.phreebooks.com. I took a look at the demo and it is fantastic! I believe it is free as it is open source and licensed under the GNU license.
