From my experience it's up to you as the service provider if you're going to tell your client you're subcontracting work.
I myself would be upfront with them. By not telling them you're it's almost as though you may be hiding something. Of course that's not your intention. It's also nice for the subcontractor to receive credit where credit is due or vice versa if something isn't being done correctly they need to be accountable. Just because you subcontract doesn't mean the communication needs to go directly to the subcontractor. It can still be filtered through you or a project manager.
