Can you be spontaneous, flexible and have fun when you have client work to do? I have a client whose newsletter I create and send out every other Tuesday. Sometimes they don't have all the edits and final approval done until 3 pm or later on Tuesday. This despite the fact that they would like to have the newsletter completed and scheduled to go out by 2 pm. Sometimes they just don't have everything ready yet.
Last Tuesday around noon, before I had the final edits, my 22-year old daughter said, "I don't have anyone to be spontaneous with! They're all working or in school." Having all our other work done except this newsletter, my husband, who works from home also, said, "We're spontaneous! Let's go for a drive!" I explained that I'd have to wait and see if I got the client's edits in time to be able to leave by 2:30 pm. I emailed the client and explained that if at all possible I'd like to wrap up the day by 2:30 pm. Within 15 minutes the client had the final edits and we were able to finish and schedule the newsletter before 2 pm.
So we were able to be spontaneous and flexible and go on a fun learning trip. Since we homeschool our afternoon drive became a 'field trip' where we could learn about nature. And boy did we get to learn about nature. We saw snow on the not-so-distant mountain tops. We walked in a 'real' forest and saw moss on the trees. And most exciting of all was the bear cub wandering near the side of the road! You can see the video of it at
You Tube. While you're there, check out Fiona's Cookbook video as well.
I love it that we can be so spontaneous and flexible and have such fun even with a busy schedule working and homeschooling a six-year old. Now it may not always be possible to drop everything and take a field trip. But when it is, it's the best feeling in the world!
Have you ever been able to make a last minute schedule change to do something with your child and still get your work done? I'd love to hear your stories!
