You could just 'Google' the name and see what comes up. If the name you choose doesn't have a business name found at Google, I'd feel fairly safe using it.

If the name is not in use in your city and isn't something well known (like Coca-Cola) you should be able to use it without any problem. I happen to know of several companies that each have the same name though they aren't related because they are in different cities or industries.
