Business is Broken

More technology, more time, more money. Those are all the wrong answers.

More human. More genuine sincere interest, more insight and perception, more time. Those are the right answers.

More time is on both lists. That's because the first list is gimmes. Gimme more technology. Gimme more time. Gimme more money. Then I can succeed.

The second list is about giving. When we give others more time, by being more human, more personal, authentic, insightful—that's where it all begins.

We Are Career Renegades. We Love Our Work. Right?

Have I mentioned Marcus Buckingham’s book “First, Break All the Rules ” ? I have? Good.

Marcus talks a lot about how we put ourselves through so much nonsense when we work. We assume, as my father told me in virtually the only bad advice he ever gave, that ‘work is work, not fun; stop looking for something…

The Single Biggest Reason Your Blog Isn't Getting Comments

Does your business have a weblog? Remember the four fundamental consumer needs from my book?

  1. Get it right
  2. Get it out there
  3. Give ‘em advice
  4. Give ‘em a voice

Those last two, proactive advising (a form of education) and allowing your…

Don't Adjust to the Tool

Remember the last pair of shoes you bought, that painful ‘wearing them in’ phase? If they weren’t comfortable from day one, you were actually wearing in your feet, not the shoes.

Technology is the same way. The folks who design and build software seem to think it’s natural to study…

Hi Joel,

I'm sure you do recognize that fellow, but here is some background for your reference.

That is of course Mr. Guy Kawasaki, noted hockey amateur, erstwhile Alltop.com moderator and Silicon Valley venture capitalprovider.

That photo has provided some serious traction in the social media space for me. I reviewed his 'Reality Check' book on my blog and it helped with visitors a bit.

The photo was taken at BlogWorld Expo 2008 in Las Vegas after Guy's keynote speech with Steve Rubel. I found the owners of BlogWorld through Twitter, negotiated a free pass in exchange for providing three days of videography during keynotes and break-out sessions.

The night before I left for Las Vegas I pulled a portion of my hamstring loading gear into my car. I still made it there with Vicodin and hot patch therapies applied.

The first day was pretty rough, but I managed to hobble around the South Hall with my hand truck of video gear in tow. Later that evening I 'won' a free dinner with the speakers, John Chow, Shoemoney, Darren Rowse, Zac Johnson and other wealthy bloggers, a personal goal of my own.

You seem to be very prolific and successful here, and I am just re-awakening my dormant writing skills.

Can you advise how to best select article assignments that are providing a better income? I see many for $15.00 which I can begin working on, but wondered if the assignment datatbase contains any larger fee in the beginning, or are 'earned'?

I plan on registering for the Film-Maker role later this week. I currently produce and direct in the SF Bay Area California, and worked in movies and television in Hollywood / Burbank for ten years.

Recently followed Michael Jordan, Jerry Rice, Charles Barkley and Ray Romano around eighteen-holes of golf at Lake Tahoe, NV. They were super cool fellows and granted interviews after their round.

Respectfully,
