So it's 2012, a new year and a great time to consider creating a new revenue stream. You don't have to get rich. Just make an extra $200-1,000 a month. Wouldn't that be nice? Well it's totally possible! You just need to do some self-reflecting and come up with a list of 5 things that you can charge for. Once you have a list, we can talk about how to attract customers and generate income. But for now, let's look ideas you might be able to cash-in on. Could you possibly...
Get into Social Media Consulting
Seriously, you'd be surprised at how many local small business owners in your area would like to outsource this. You can help them with the basics, like creating or claiming a Yelp listing, setting-up a Twitter account or Facebook page. Either way, chances are that if you're reading this post then you're probably at least a step or two ahead of the local business owner and that's all you really need to merit earning a wage for your knowledge. Worried you don't know enough to be a "consultant"? That's fair, I suppose, but you can always pick up some training over at VAClassroom.
Find a Freelance Gig
Freelancing is more than just writing or photography. These days practically anything can be outsourced to a freelancer. There are jobs ranging from developing art for children's novels to bookkeeping services. Our favorite place to freelance is over at Odesk. Odesk is easy to use and has thousands of fresh job postings every day. It's also a great place to check-out if you're looking to hire a freelancer for an upcoming project.
Get into Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing has been going on forever and lots of people have built immense fortunes by mastering affiliate marketing. However, it's really tough to break into and might even end up costing you money. However if you think you have a really niche idea and are looking for ways to monetize it consider checking out ClickBank to help you reach out to potential marketers who can either re-sell or distribute your idea for you. All you have to do is pay the affiliate a small commission for making the sale.
Start a Photo Booth Company
Photo booths are in high demand. People rent them for weddings, corporate events, graduation parties, you name it. Starting a photo booth company is actually more affordable than you think too. The only real cost is the booth and the software needed to power it. The rest is your time and labor. Here's a photo booth resource/website we found while doing a quick Google search, might be worth a look.
Start a Catering Business
Sure, like the photo booth business you'll actually need to physically do something other than hammer on a keyboard. But if you like to cook and don't mind dealing with picky people then a catering business might be a good fit for you. Inc. magazine wrote a nice piece last year and at the time catering was said to be a $7 billion a year industry.
Bottom line, there has to be something you can do to supplement your income and potentially build a sustainable business out of someday. Don't let the intimidation of asking friends or family what they see as your strengths either; sometimes they can really help you narrow it down.
Once you have identified what you want to focus on, start thinking about a fair hourly rate you can charge. Keep in mind all of the costs you'll incur as well.
Finally, start spamming all of your Facebook friends and LinkedIn connections and try to scare up some work! :-)'
