Summertime, Parenting and Keeping Up the VA work

Dear fellow VA's who are parents of children,

How do you handle parenting and working in the summer months when the little angels in your life descend on the home front 24/7?

Do you adjust your schedule and set aside certain hours or days for parenting and other hours or days for VA-ing?

Do you shush little folk who are bellowing "..but I'm bored" away from your office area or give the upraised eyebrow and finger to the lip when you're on the telephone with a client?

Summer camp, play dates, reading clubs, lemonade stands, sitters and such help a lot but it seems that children love to be with Mommy at a time she is crunching the deadline on a project.

How do you resist laughing out loud when you listen to your child or children telling their friends the house rules of "My Mom is working now so we have to be quiet and go outside" and then they run up to you with a big hug or show you the picture they've drawn of you at work?

What pointers can you provide to having a healthy balance of work life and family life during the summer months?

My husband and I both have worked from home since our youngest was two. So she learned early how to behave when we needed her to be quiet. She'll be starting Kindergarten in August; however, we're homeschooling her. Our clients know we work from home with a five-year old and it's never been a challenge. If we really need quiet time, we get her grown sister or a friend to watch her.

Knowing that I'll need to spend more time with her on a daily basis when homeschooling starts, I've let my clients know this and structure my available times and when I will return emails accordingly. I'm also taking one day off each week. So far every client's on board with the new program.
