Independent professionals used to rely on face networking and referrals to build their businesses. Today, when you are getting started, it’s still a good idea to go to networking groups and meet as many people as possible. It’s always a good idea to ask for referrals.

But today that’s not enough…and often it’s not even necessary. People are using the Internet to find even the most intimate, personal services. I found my massage therapist and hair stylist from the Internet. That’s about as “up close and personal” as you can get.

So imagine if you’re a professional service such as a coach, tax advisor, attorney, inventory consultant, software developer, speaker…you name it. Your clients might make their decision after they visit your website, even if their BFF recommended you enthusiastically.
