Virtual Assistant or Business Owner - Which Are You

I have had the pleasure of working with and getting to know many virtual assistants during my short time in business. I have also seen my business triple since I started in April 0f 2008 and I say all that to bring me to the point of this post. Virtual Assistant or Business Owner? Most would answer they are both but really your a "Business Owner" and this is what alot of Virtual Assistant's seem not realize.

In the grand scheme of things we start a business to do something we enjoy, the tasks that encompass the day. But the "Task" itself is the Virtual Assistance and what we as VA's are doing is operating a business. Businesses with a strategic plan, marketing strategies, daily, monthly and yearly performance goals, management, billing and invoices, customer service, sales and so on.

If you get nothing else from this post just remember you are entering no starting a business. You are not starting a Virtual Assistant because that is merely a task of the business. And as you start, continue or grow your business always remind yourself that is what your doing. Don't get caught up in the task and lose your business.

Wishing us all great success and long lasting businesses.

I was talking about this same topic with someone a couple of months ago. When I worked in the corporate world as a word processing operator, administrative assistant, and receptionist, it was much different than now. Part of business operations involves marketing. After you have done extensive marketing to get the clients and/or projects, it's time to be a virtual assistant.

The exactly right Sue. But if you can't hire someone else to do it for you right away then you must deal with the running of the business in order to feed your passion. And when it's time you can hand off those tasks that you don't enjoy hence the "Virtual Assistant" for the most part.

Which basically means we as Virtual Assistant Business Owners we need to practice what we preach.

That's an interesting perspective Monique. I do agree that we are all business owners. Too often virtual assistants don't really know how to run a business and get lost in that aspect of it. Perhaps they would be better off working on a team or having someone else run the business aspect of it.

However, if your passion is the task, focus on that! We must live our passions because what we are passionate about is what we are good at. If we aren't passionate about running the business, hire someone else to do that.

This is what my husband, a small business consultant, tells people. Do what you're good at and let someone else do the rest. It's the only sensible way to do business, retain your passion and succeed.
