Virtually Anywhere: Virtual Workers Can Be Location Independent

Many who choose to become virtual assistants do so because they want to work from home and not be tied to an office. The real beauty though is that a virtual worker doesn't even need to work from home. A virtual worker can be location independent. That means they don't need to be tied to one location. They can work from virtually anywhere.

That's exactly what my husband Joel and I are doing. We've been working from home for the last 4 plus years and have decided to now be location independent. We no longer have a home. We're taking our six year old and working while we travel anywhere in the world we want.

We did a trial run in August in Canada and realized how much we enjoyed working while traveling. When we returned, we decided to do it full time.

Would you like to work from anywhere? What questions do you have about working location independent? I'd love to hear from you.

It's interesting to me that these comments seem to be about control: having enough, but not too much.

An important thing to keep in mind is that as an entrepreneur, you are in control. For every one of these concerns or challenges, the answer is to simply make a different choice. Don't go through life, whether in your business or not, living up to (or down to) others' expectations.

The US government accepts digital documents. If you have good backups of your files, they're safer than paper and take up zero space when you travel.

We've certainly found that folks want to assist with our sightseeing. We simply explain that we're not on holiday, we're working, and then, we work! And traveling is an excellent time for work. I've been dictating books, blog posts, and random ideas to Sue while I drive for years. These travels have been no different: the work gets done, because we make it get done.

When you see what seems like an insurmountable obstacle, ask yourself, what different choices could I make which would render the obstacle moot?

Thank you for your comments Collette and Hilde. We don't plan on purchasing an RV since we'll mainly be house sitting for extended periods of time and have a place to live with wireless access as we do so.

Hilde, since we already did a test run for several weeks in Canada in August, we know it will work. We not only kept our regular client work going, we added new clients. Even on days where we travel most of the day, we can stop and work along the way. So far every client has been extremely happy with how well it's worked since none of them ever lost contact with us in any way and their projects all were completed on time.

Thank you all for your comments. We'll continue to post at our blog about how this works at http://canfieldofdreams.com.

Who knows maybe with your earnings you can purchase an RV and be totally mobile? Very cool concept.

Hi Sue,
What a great idea to do. Should definitely be possible. The only question I would have: how are you going to be focused enough to actually do enough work. I don't know the hours you work now and if you can minimise those in principle. But you don't want to lose customers or income.

I find even when I have visitors over (and we have a lot since we moved to Spain) that it distracts me from me work. I can only imagine how much I would be distracted by the travel.

Good luck though. I admire you.
Hilde

Hi JoCarole. I've found that hard copies just aren't necessary any more. You can have a separate online back up if you'd like. We are using a van for our travels; though some families use an RV.

I work at home right now but my plan always was to travel at least half of the year while working from a laptop. I thought if I needed an office now and then that I could rent space and also have access to equipment like a copier/fax/scanner, etc. I am just wondering how it would work with keeping hard copies of documents. I like to have backups of everything, cannot just keep online. Also wondering if I would have to trade in my Subaru for a van to have room for everything I would need....
