WordPress as a Website Development Tool

The topic today is website design and development. We're big advocates of using WordPress and would like to get your thoughts regarding what tools you prefer when it comes to building websites for yourself or for your clients.

This post is going to discuss the Do-It-Yourself approach to building a website. If you are like most people, you've probably been frustrated by your ability to get a quality website built. It's not for a lack of options either, let's face it, anybody can build a website these days, right?

WRONG.

While building a website is not rocket science, building it according to best practices can be slightly similar. There are specific components that need be considered. Such as, a sitemap, contact forms a video player; perhaps an image scroller, live chat and social media links would also be nice.

This is where things can get complicated and if you've traveled down this path only to realize that you can't possibly accomplish all of this with a basic website building tool like GoDaddy, Weebly or Dreamweaver then maybe it's time to consider using WordPress.

WordPress has evolved from a basic blogging platform into what is commonly referred to as a Content Management System (CMS). WordPress has evolved quickly too, thanks to the contributions of the open source software community who constantly develop new plugins, and themes which enable extended functionality that make just about anything possible.

What makes WordPress stand-out from other CMS' is its variety of themes. Themes are like templates and some of them are incredibly polished; mimicking the look and feel of any major brand website you would come across. There are several companies that produce themes regularly and they all have what are called theme clubs. A theme club allows you to join and then get access to all of the themes that the theme company produces, usually in perpetuity. We've always been fans of WooThemes (affiliate link) because they release great looking themes at least 2-3 times a month and they have an incredible support team who answer support requests in a forum lightning fast.

One drawback of using WordPress is that there is a bit of a learning curve. Most folks get hung-up on installing WordPress onto a server but most major web hosts now have what are called one-click installs that make getting WordPress installed much easier. In fact, in our experience using GoDaddy, the one-click install they offer takes about 20 minutes total to complete. Not bad.

I love using WordPress and the Headway Theme to build affordable websites for my clients! And since WordPress is so easy to use, I can train my clients to make basic updates to their own site, which they love :-)
